The Guerilla Poster Art Project (GPAP)
It started with a photograph, from a collection of thousands, all documenting the plight of those homeless and helpless individuals we see on our city’s streets all over the world. How can a photograph communicate the very human story about suffering and plight without alienating and angering those who look at it? And how might such photographs raise awareness for people to think and act more responsibly, to help those who can not help themselves? |
This is the story of Robert Terrell’s documentary photography journey, and the experimental means he and Jean engage in to get the word out on sensitive and important issues that impact our community’s well being. EVERYONE HAS THE RIGHT, was a collaborative effort that began with five photographs and text from the United Nations Declaration of Human Rights regarding the right that all humans have to housing. The posters were produced and posted 'graffiti style' in various neighborhoods in San Francisco in June, 2006. |
Through collaborating with two highly accomplished graffiti artists we managed to post approximately a hundred posters, two of which are currently on display at the California Historical Society (CHS) in San Francisco. Shortly after executing the GPAP, we wrote and presented a paper for ‘Photography and the City’ an international conference at the University College Dublin. The conference was attended by over one hundred scholars and practitioners, who discussed the role of photography in representing urban life and landscapes, and in shaping common visual knowledge of cities. |
